STUDY 1 – NITRIC OXIDE & NASAL BREATHING

The nasal mucosa and paranasal sinuses continuously produce nitric oxide (NO) — a messenger that dilates blood vessels, expands the bronchi, and improves oxygen uptake in the lungs. Mouth breathing completely bypasses this production.

STUDY 2 — THE GLYMPHATIC SYSTEM

The glymphatic system, discovered in 2013, is a lymphatic network in the brain
that becomes active exclusively during sleep. It transports neurotoxins, beta-amyloid
plaques, and metabolic waste products out of the brain tissue. Disturbances in deep sleep—
for example, due to breathing interruptions—measurably reduce the efficiency of this system.

STUDY 3 — MOUTH BREATHING AND FACIAL DEVELOPMENT

For decades, chronic mouth breathing has been associated with characteristic changes in facial structure in orthodontics: elongated face, narrow maxilla, recessed chin, altered tooth position.

STUDY 4 — SLEEP, CORTISOL & STRESS HORMONES

Sleep disruptions and drops in oxygen saturation increase nocturnal cortisol levels.
Cortisol inhibits regeneration, fat loss, and the immune system. Consistent, deep nasal
breathing is one of the most effective non-pharmacological ways to stabilize this process.

STUDY 5 — STANFORD UNIVERSITY

Researchers at the Stanford University Sleep Medicine Division have scientifically proven the direct link between mouth breathing during sleep and disturbed sleep quality.

JAMES NESTOR — BREATH (2020)

Journalist and author James Nestor conducted a self-experiment in which he breathed exclusively through his mouth for 10 days. Blood pressure rose, snoring exploded, sleep collapsed. After 10 days of nasal breathing, all values normalized. The experiment was conducted in collaboration with Stanford University and is documented in his book "Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art" (Riverhead Books, 2020).

importance of nasal breathing for sleep quality and cognitive performance for years.

Mouth breathing dries out mucous membranes, weakens the natural defense system
